In the wellness world, clean living and cocktails are rarely used in the same sentence. Sure, drinking heavy amounts of alcohol on the regular isn’t doing any favors for your health. But a fun night with friends celebrated with cocktails- yes, please! So when I heard my friend and fellow IIN Health Coach, Tara Roscioli, was releasing an entire recipe book dedicated to clean cocktails, I got my hands on a copy as soon as I could.
Clean…as opposed to dirty?! YES! Cocktails are often loaded with refined sugar, artificial flavors, and dyes. If you look on the back ingredient list of the pre-made mixers at the grocery, I can assure you it is none other than a “chemical shitstorm.” And that’s exactly what is causing your headaches, bloat, and overall inflamation – otherwise known as a terrible hangover.
Tara and her co-author, Beth, chose four spirits that are lesser in calories and also pair well with fresh herbs, freshly squeezed juices, powerhouse spices and natural sugars. As a born and raised Kentucky girl, I was more than thrilled that bourbon was chosen as one of the four!
Clean Cocktails: Righteous Recipes for the Modern Mixologist is a must-have if you love a good cocktail! The book contains a ton of recipes for actual cocktails, but it also includes tips on stocking your bar and recipes for fun, clean additions, like Matcha Tea Syrup.
Toast this Bourbon with Maple’d Rosemary cocktail with family and friends this holiday season. Enjoy!
Bourbon with Maple’d Rosemary
2 fresh rosemary sprigs
Freshly squeezed juice of 1/2 lemon
1 1/2 ounces bourbon (Woodford Reserve is my preferred!)
1 tablespoon maple syrup
Roll 1 of the rosemary sprigs between your hands to release its oils. Add it to a cocktail shaker, along with the lemon juice, bourbon, maple syrup, and ice and shake.
Strain the contents of the shaker into a couppette or martini glass. Garnish with the remaining rosemary spring and serve.
